I’ll be the judge of that
Sunday, March 14th, 2010This week I was assistant judge for the VWC President’s Competition. I’ve blogged about it on their If Shakespeare… blog here:

I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it was hard work! I’m hoping that it will help me to think outside the box for my Whittaker Prize entry which is my next job. Naturally I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Prizes Galore!
Saturday, March 6th, 2010I am very proud to say that I have been awarded one of the much coveted inaugural Oscars Oscars, or #OscarsOscars on twitter. Naturally I have accepted, see here (scroll down for my ‘speech’!):

But I’m not the only winner, the wonderful VWC have also been honoured along with Jon Pinnock’s hilarious ‘Mrs Darcy vs the aliens’ amongst others. See my links page to see more on these.
The results of the VWC short story competition, as awarded at Get Writing have now been posted on the If Shakespeare… blog, along with photos of some of the winners. Congratulations to them all, I hear the standard was very high.

I also decided today that I am going to have a go at a competition, The Whittaker Prize which starts at midnight tonight. Wish me luck!!

I’m making progress
Monday, August 24th, 2009I have spent the weekend focusing on writing, getting set up to deal with being partially self employed, getting my name ‘out there’ on twitter, facebook, and Musicbrick.
I’ve also just joined the British Fantasy Society, and I’m hoping to submit some short stories to them to see if they get published in their magazine.
As well as effort on my part, I’m really pleased to be able to say that I have recently received some excellent feedback from several sources, which is both encouraging and exciting. One thing that seems to generate a good response is emotional honesty. Now I know this, I will make a conscious effort to build it into my writing wherever I can.
If you read any of my work and spot it, let me know your thoughts, it’s feedback that makes the magic happen!

I’m on a roll
Saturday, August 15th, 2009I’ve finally realised that my writing was only limited by fear! Since I found out that my first story was accepted I have had lots of ideas for more.
Last night I sat down to write one story and actually completed the first draft. I’m really pleased with the result too!
In some ways I’m now wondering why I didn’t try to write before. In reality I suspect I have been like a glass filling with water. All the experiences have been collecting up in me and finally I have reached the point where they are spilling out onto the page.
With any luck I can repeat the early success, but I am very aware that a writer’s badges of honour usually include plenty of rejections too. I just need to learn to be resilient and keep trying. Sounds easy when you put it like that!!

Robins
Friday, July 31st, 2009I’ve just received a letter from The People’s Friend. They have accepted my short story ‘Robins’ although they reserve the right to change the title. They haven’t indicated when it will appear, but I will let you know as soon as I find out!
I’m dead excited as this means that both my first article and my first short story submissions have been accepted! Now, about that novel…

Metamorphosis
Friday, March 13th, 2009I have just sent a short story called Metamorphosis to the Wind in the Willows centenary competition. Results are due on May 30th, so, if successful I’ll post a link, if not, I’ll post the story. Either way there will soon be some of my work available.
