Robins

Friday, July 31st, 2009

I’ve just received a letter from The People’s Friend. They have accepted my short story ‘Robins’ although they reserve the right to change the title. They haven’t indicated when it will appear, but I will let you know as soon as I find out!

I’m dead excited as this means that both my first article and my first short story submissions have been accepted! Now, about that novel…

Making a difference at work

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I’m not going to say on here where I work, some know, please don’t mention names if you reply, I’ll edit it out!

I’m working on making a difference there, developing a system to report on our environmental impact. We are actually not one of the bad guys, our building is modern and I have proved we are heading in the right direction.

This thread isn’t about the company per se, it’s about what I’m achieving.

So far I have:

* Analysed electricity consumption on the main site

* Analysed fuel consumption for the largest division

* Assessed waste management

* Kicked off a project to analyse the cost and environmental impact of printing and copying

* Raised awareness in the business

I have written reports on all these areas, all of which have been well received by the managers concerned, all of whom are working to make improvements, partly to make savings but also because they are starting to care.

I’m rather pleased with myself if I’m really honest, particularly because our parent company is now starting to look at environmental issues and we are ready for it! Yay!

I’m hopeful that we will be working towards accreditation in the near future.

Badgers and Trees and Wildlife generally!

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I’m now officially the Badger Co-ordinator for Stevenage, and am also a Tree Warden with Stevenage Council.

I’m hoping to use the opportunities to really step up the focus on wildlife in the area. I will be visiting setts, collating records, surveying wildlife and hopefully getting people interested too.

I made a difference at Hartham Common, the ripples are still going, I’m sure I can make a difference in Stevenage too.

Sonisphere!!!!

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Is just a few days away now. Cos I booked on day one I have been given a membership of the Founder Member’s Club (FMC) and invited to a pre-party on the Friday. I’m going to do a write up for the site of the whole event, partly cos I can, partly cos I expect it to be just awesome, but also cos it’s good practise for me!

Meanwhile, I’ve added a couple more musicbricks and will be adding lots more over the coming weeks…

Degree results

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

OK, thought I’d better post about these. Basically, I have a letter telling me I got a 2:1, which is fantastic news!!

I have also had an email from my tutor to tell me my work is under review as I was just 0.4% away from a first. Watch this space, if there is a change I’ll let you know!

I have now started on Chapter Two…

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

The first half of Chapter Two is written and with the VWC for critique.

For some reason I am writing this one manually, sitting in tea and coffee shops with a pen and notebook! This is useful as it means that I can rewrite in the notebook, rewrite as I type it, then get critique and then adjust. Once complete I can then review the book in it’s entirety for the edit.

I also had my first ever interview! OK, it was for the VWC newsletter, but start small…

Hartham Common news

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I commented on the Water Framework Directive in an attempt to boost interest in Hartham Common, and also emailed Mark Prisk the MP for the area. He replied, with a lovely letter saying he was interested and read my study and will watch with interest. If you live in Hertford, please write to him, he will have to respond to a constituent!

You can also adopt the rivers as part of the Our Rivers Campaign, the link is on the Hartham Common tab on my website.

Also, I have managed to get Hartham Common on the list of sites for water vole monitoring. This is great news as it wasn’t on the original list, something positive is really starting to happen!

I’ve done it!!!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

After around four years of sheer hard work I have finally completed my degree. It was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, because of all the other things I had going on throughout, but it’s also the most satisfying.

Would I do it again? You bet!

Roll on graduation day! (And watch this space for my grade…)

Musicbrick Gold!

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

I received a newsletter from Musicbrick last night and they have started to select the best bricks to be labelled Musibrick Gold. Five bricks were chosen from nearly 2,000 on the site and *drum roll*

ONE OF THEM WAS MINE!!!!

I’d like to thank everyone that knows me……. seriously though, I’m dead chuffed as the one that was chosen is The Heat Is On which is about my cousin Richard. If you haven’t already, head to www.musicbrick.com and check out my bricks. While you’re there, sign up, add your own bricks and vote for your favourites too, at worst you’ll find some new music, chat to some new people, share some memories….. What’s not to like?!

S

Libertine

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Well, I’ve had lots of feedback on Alex’s Story, mostly positive, all constructive. The difficulty is that it doesn’t slot nicely into any particular genre, which leaves a question-mark over how commercial it will be. I’m passionate about the story and trust me, it will get written, but there has been a further development.

One morning last week I had a flash of inspiration in which two new characters introduced themselves to me. A couple of days later a third chap came and said hello too. So, I’m also working on a story of an angel and a vampire, set in the late 80’s gothic/rock scene. So raise a Snakebite ‘n’ black and toast the new fantasy super (well she likes to think so) hero, Libertine…
